Thursday saw the weather become a factor in the matches. The afternoon match got off without a hitch, but the night match had to be postponed late in the 2nd set.
In the afternoon Juan Martin Del Potro endured an early onslaught by Croatian Marin Cilic. Cilic won the first set and was up an early break and 3-1 lead in the 2nd. Then things seemed to fall apart. Del Po won the next 5 games to steal the 2nd set, and it was all done after that. Cilic seemed to fold and Del Potro cruised to an easy 4 set victory. This will be Del Potro's 2nd Grand Slam semifinal this year.
It is unknown who Del Potro will face in the semi's. Fernando Gonzalez and Rafael Nadal were having a close back and forth battle, with Nadal winning the first set 7-6. The 2nd set featured much of the same, but with a rain delay that lasted over an hour. The players were able to get back on court, and it once again went to a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker it began to rain once again, and the match was postponed until Friday.
Friday looks bleak as far as the rains holding off. It seems that rain will affect almost the entire weekend. There could be more tennis come next Monday.
In other Thursday matches, the Williams sisters beat Kleybanova-Makarova to reach the womens doubles finals, and the team of Leander Paes and Cara Black lost the mixed doubles final to a couple jobbers. Carly Gullickson and some dude whose name I can't remember.
Picks for Friday.
I think Rafa will hold off Gonzalez and win.
Serena Williams will have a little too much for Kim Clijsters. Clijsters in only her 3rd tournament back from retirement will show some rust and lose in a close match.
Caroline Wozniacki will have little trouble with Yanina Wickmayer and move on to her first Grand Slam final.
